Hey there, guys! And HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope your holiday season was absolutely amazing, and that this new year brings you nothing but blessings & happiness!

This Christmas was super chaotic on my end. With my school closing two weeks before winter break, and the usual holiday hectic-ness, and the dynamics of our family drama, I was up to my ears in stress and couldn’t get five seconds to just freakin’ breathe. It took a toll on me, and I’m honestly relieved it has finally passed (like a damn kidney stone, but it passed).

Anyways, now that the new year is under way and I’m adjusting to the routine of being a SAHM (and also putting together my own little photography gig!!), I’ve had some time to get my life on track and finally dive back into this blog of mine.

To start off, last week I stripped our house of all the Christmas decorations. It was honestly so sad, and our home looks so bare now. I’m all about the holidays and going absolutely overboard, and once I have everything up, it usually looks like Santa threw up in here. And as much as I was reluctant to take it all down, I did it within a matter of two hours. I just had to rip off the bandaid, pack it all up and put it in the basement until next Christmas.

Still, I looked around and was immediately depressed with how “blah” the house looked now. I was spending the rest of that day rearranging and adding/subtracting decor, hoping I’d feel a little better about how things looked. I’d finally come to terms with how the house was arranged when I all of a sudden got the bright idea to dig through my Valentine’s Day decor. Yeah, it’s over a month away, but honestly, when do I NOT decorate prematurely? Our Christmas tree was up November 1st, for crying out loud.

Anyways, the first thing I decorated for Valentine’s Day was my tiered coffee tray. It’s seriously one of my favorite things to put together, and I could spend some serious time making it look absolutely perfect. Once I finally had it the exact way I wanted it, I found myself diving into a DIY project (because why wouldn’t I just leave it at that?) that I’d been wanting to try for months and just never found the time to do.

Andddd that leads me to today’s blog – my first DIY post! I’m going to share with you a step-by-step tutorial into creating a faux whipped cream mug topper for Rae Dunn mugs!

I saw these fake whipped toppings once upon a time on Instagram, and I was immediately in love. They looked so cute on tiered trays as decorations, and I began to search all over for how I could get my hands on one! I was about to order one from a shop on Etsy when I was like, “hold up, I’m sureee I can try to make this myself.” And sure enough, I did. And now I want to share that with you! So with that being said, let’s get to it!

What you’ll need:

  • a Rae Dunn mug (or any mug you’d like)

  • white craft paint

  • lightweight spackle

  • foam craft sheets

  • cardstock

  • hot glue gun

  • a piece of cardboard

  • wax or parchment paper

  • pencil

  • scissors

  • painter’s tape

  • hole punch

  • glitter

  • paper straws

  • piping bag and tip

STEP ONE: Trace the top of your mug on a piece of card stock.

STEP TWO: Cut out the piece of card stock and trace on a white sheet of craft foam. Then, cut out the foam sheet.

STEP THREE: Hot glue the card stock to the foam sheet.

STEP FOUR: Take your piece of cardboard and wrap it in a sheet of wax paper using painter’s tape to secure it. Then, make a circle out of painter’s tape and attach your card stock/foam sheet circle to the cardboard (foam side down!).

STEP FIVE: Scoop spackle out of the container and put in something disposable (either a bowl or plastic cup like above). Pour in some of the white craft paint and stir until it is completely mixed. * The white paint helps give your whipped cream the correct color since most spackle is tinted blue or gray. You can also add in a bit of red (in addition to the white) if you’d like to go for that strawberry cream look, too!

STEP SIX: Assemble your piping bag like you would to decorate a cake. Fill your bag with your spackle mix to the midway mark. Lay the bag flat on a table and push the mixture to the end with the piping tip.

STEP SEVEN: Create a little dollop of mix in the center of your card stock. This helps to give your whipped topping a little volume like real whipped cream. Then, pipe your mixture around as you would a cupcake. * Make sure to cover the edge of the cardboard so your whipped cream will sit nicely on the top of your mug.

STEP EIGHT: Using scissors, cut a paper straw of your choosing into thirds. Take one and simply stick it into your whipped cream.

STEP NINE: Use a hole punch to cut out “sprinkles” of the color you wish. Since this is for a Valentine’s Day decoration, I used a dark pink and light pink. After reaching your desired amount, sprinkle them onto the whipped cream. * NOTE: Carefully use tweezers to secure the sprinkles into the spackle mix to be sure they do not fall off once it dries.

STEP TEN: Last, add glitter (if you wish)! I first wanted to use a gold glitter, but after thinking about it, I found this super cute iridescent glitter that looks like little sprinkles! So I went with this one.

STEP ELEVEN: Wait about 1.5-2 days for it to completely dry. Once it is dry, carefully remove it from the cardboard. And there you have it!

Set your faux whipped cream atop your favorite mug, and you are done!

This was honestly super easy to make myself, and I’m glad I decided to do it rather than buy it off of Etsy. For my first time, I’d say it didn’t come out too bad. There are little things I’d try to work on (like the volume of the whipped cream) for the next time I decided to make this. Otherwise, I was thoroughly impressed with myself.

The best part of this is that it’s completely customizable. You can add in different color paint to give it a little tint. You can use whatever materials to make sprinkles as well. You can also use different color schemes to associate with different holidays. The sky is the limit with this project!

Thanks for checking out my first DIY blog, crafty mamas!
